"Birds of prey" - Art Element Theme Challenge

This month's theme was chosen by Cathy - "Birds of prey". I already knew it would be a stressful  month and I still struggled with my lung, but I took the chance to at least sketch, paint, and experiment with styles a little bit.

I love how both of this sketches turned out although they are so diffeent in style! I will definitely play more with that.

Also I try to incorporate more bold color contrast quite often. I am not drawn to realistic images but rather to expressionistic ones. Still, I have to work on both before I will get close to what I would love to express ;)

Not all turned out well... but I will show you all here!

And I don't enjoy repetitious work like feathers from wings. Nope.

I get messy with it and I don't like that... but at least I gave it a try and I know that I don't enjoy it. I don't want to spend too much time with that... but before you can get lose, you have to know how it is build up... and I don't want to!

But I so love the face of this one! You see the difference if I enjoy painting a part? I pay attention to the details, shadows and form... NOT true for wings. Ugh.

All of my coptic stitch sketch books really hold up wonderfully to a lot of "abuse".

Nature is sometimes just weird. But I love it!

I also mixed water color and goauche quite a lot.

...as well water soluble pen and a water brush with diluted white gouache I made myself, it creates wonderful effects!

To the left whit gouache with a water soluble black pen and on the left only water colors.

I love her! With the pink eyes and the mix of details and lose colors! This is the direction I want to go to more.

By the way: The best water color sketch book I have used until now is really the handmade one with high quality water color paper. I use the back ides for mixed media and the right side only for water color. If you are struggling with water color sketch books, I really can recommend binding your own one. Saves a lot of nerves!

Thank you for joining us for this month's theme challenge and please have a look at everyone's creations! :)

  5. I love looking through your sketchbooks Claire, each sketch and style is beautiful. I love the kestrel with the yellow stripe. It's really striking!

  6. I don't see a problem with ANY of these. They are all beautiful in their own way. I admire your ability to create to precisely. And, your owl with the pink eyes, she's definitely something special for sure! I'm glad you were able to play and experiment despite the struggle. Here's hoping you continue to heal.

  7. They are all so beautiful Claire! I love the "racing stripe" on a couple, but the pink eyed owl looks like such a diva, she makes me laugh.

  9. Claire, you may critique your work because that's what all creators do :P but your sketches are all fantastic! The details in them, the differences, the way the various paints work together - there's so much interesting stuff going on here that I went back for a closer look at all of them. Love them.

  10. Claire, I would NOT say any one of your 'studies' is not right. Each one is fantastic and so detailed, tho I understand about the repetitive feather painting. I really do like the pink/purple owl at the end, a fantasy owl, or maybe sunset/sunrise does have this color effect on owls in the wild? Alysen

  11. You have the same feeling as me, it is why I like illustrative drawing, the repetition of wings, fur... etc,. having said that you have so much detail in your drawings, so much more than me. You have a wonderful style :D

  12. I so adore your sketches and paintings. If you decide to turn them into a coffee table book I would definitely buy a copy. I had a similar feather frustration making my pieces. I am too impatient to pay attention to the details over and over and over for each one. I really enjoyed every image you shared.

  13. Your sketches are all wonderful. I really like the owl with the pink eyes. Great job!

  14. All of your sketches are amazing - I love the turquoise hawk and the pink owl. Thanks for talking about the process for the paints (I know nothing about painting).

  15. WOW! I love all of your sketches, drawings and paintings. And the idea behind binding your own book - you can pick the perfect size for the scale you want to work. I always love your posts!

  16. I feel so inspired by your sketches and the freedom you take with sketching and coloring! I feel intimidated by feathers and practice sketching them separately :) Your birds have a character and an expression of its own, each one of them!

  17. I want to see them! I want to hold them, and look at them up close! Sigh. I am enchanted, as always, and wonder what you are seeing that you are unhappy with - I mean I understand. They can look good and still not satisfy. But I think they look wonderful. You have artistic license to paint wings any way you choose! I am debating participating in the #100 day project this year. You may have convinced me with your Coptic book...

  18. I love that all your birds have their own special home in the book you made for them. I enjoyed see all the ways you experimented with techniques and styles. My favorite is the flying owl!

  19. I am amazed at your discipline to draw something every day. I have several favorites. But for some reason the blue and white bird that looks like it is looking directly at the viewer with some serious attitude is my favorite. I also like how you added the yellow stripe behind the one bird. I also love the owl with the pink eyes. They are all fantastic in different ways. Those are just my personal favorites. Fantastic job Claire!
